Bunch has served in Small is Monday service speaker Memorial Day event 11 a.m., courthouse By CATHY WILSON Staff Writer A former Naval offi cer during World War II who eventually had a fed eral courthouse building named after him will be the guest speaker during Monday’s Memorial Day observance scheduled to be held on the historic courthouse green at 11 a.m. Retired Judge Herbert Small, a former district and superior court judge in the area, will lead the ceremony that honors those who died while serv ing this nation. The federal courthouse in Elizabeth City was named after Small earlier this year. A life-long resident of Elizabeth City, Small is a graduate of the University of Virginia Engineering School and the University of North Carolina Law School at Chapel HiU. He started practicing law in 1949. Thirty years later, he was elected superior court judge for the First Judi cial District and served as senior resident judge for 17 years. Sponsored by American Legion Post 126, names of veterans who have died since last year’s obser vance will be read during the ceremony and wreaths will be place in memory of aU who died in service to their country. In the event of inclem ent weather, the service will be held in the county recreation department. Lassiter, served as assis tant principal at the school for almost two years. “This is an honor and a privilege,” Lassiter told members of the Perqui mans Board of Education Monday night following her appointment. “I’m excited to accept the challenge of becom ing the new captain of the Pirates ship as we continue to sail the course for success at Per quimans Count Lassiter ^ ^ ^ School!” A native of Gates Coun ty where she still resides, Lassiter is a three-time graduate of East Carolina University with a bache lor’s degree in teaching the mentally handicapped. Also, she has two mas ter’s degrees: one in teach ing the severely/profound handicapped and a second one in school administra tion. Former Camp Cale director found dead From staff reports Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley learned Tuesday that the former director of Camp Cale Re treat, who was facing trial on six child sex charges, apparently committed suicide by carbon monox ide poisoning in Virginia Beach sometime Monday Margie Hobbs, police public information officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, con firmed Tuesday morning that Stephen Carter was found dead in a vehicle in a wooded area in the 4800 block of Blackwater Road in Virginia Beach around 10 p.m. Monday night. There were no signs of foul play, she added. Carter was first charged last July with taking in decent liberties with a child and first degree sex offense involving a child under the age of 13. Additional child sex charges involving two oth er children were added in November. At the time of his ini tial arrest, . court docu ments banned Carter from having any contact with a child under the age of 18 except his own, and banned him from the property of Camp Cale Re treat. Camp Cale Retreat is a summer camp and con ference center in Perqui mans County operated by the Chowan Baptist Asso ciation. Carter had served as di rector of the retreat since February 2002. AEMC breaks ground on new building By CATHY WILSON Staff Writer The rain stopped and the sim came out Monday morning just in time for of ficials to turn the first shov els of dirt signaling the start of construction on the new $4.8 million Albemarle Electric Membership Cor poration’s (AEMC) office building and warehouse in WinfaU. Brad Furr, general man ager of AEMC, said the co op’s new bufiding, located about a mile from its cur rent location, will be con structed by Annis Building Corporation with much of the work being done by local subcontractors. The project is expected to be completed by February “This groundbreaking ceremony represents the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Albemarle EMC’s endeavor to provide affordable, reliable electric ity to the rural parts of northeast North Carolina,” said Furr. “Our cooperative has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1945 when a group of people came together to charter AEMC. Beginning with a membership of 1,200, Albe marle EMC now has more than 12,000 members...We never forget that this is a member-owned coopera tive.
